A Blackpool school has been continuing to teach its music students throughout the self-isolation period with the help of video calls via Skype.

Blackpool Music School (BMS), on Waterloo Road in South Shore, closed its doors on March 23 for at least a month following advice from the Government due to the coronavirus pandemic but that hasn’t stopped tutors teaching their students.

There are currently 85 students having different music tuition from the school on various instruments with 11 tutors helping them.

Because of the closure of the school it meant there was no tuition for pupils until the tutors came up with the idea.

The school’s chairman, John Shaw, who founded the school, said: “After collaboration with tutors we have set up Skype tuition and the students are on board with this. The school can still function and deliver its lessons either one to one or in groups.

“With this been accepted it helps those who are self-isolated in their homes, learning an instrument and learning a new skill reading music.

“Also they are being able to speak to their tutors about their lesson as well.”

John said the response has been fantastic and has opened a ‘new perspective’ on teaching music.

He said: “Some tutors had some concerns but the reaction has been great. It’s a learning curve for the future as if a student is poorly they could still participate via Skype.”

He added: “Music as you will be aware is a brilliant pastime and should be used in these uncertain times to help with depression and other problems.

“We can cover from the ages of 07 to 97 in most musical instruments. If the student has no instrument this could be hired for a small fee subject to their circumstances.”

Formed in 2006, BMS is a registered charity with non profit status and there are no fees.

BMS IS NOW OFFERING TUITION VIA SKYPE

We have closed the building down until further notice, due to Covid-19

We currently have 85 students having different music tuition on various instruments with 11 tutors. After collaboration with tutors, we have set up Skype tuition and our current students are on board with this, so the school can still function and deliver its lessons either 1 to 1 or in groups. On-line tuition can help those who are being isolated in their homes to learn an instrument and new skills, with the benefit of being able to speak to the tutors about their lesson via the internet.

As you are aware music is a brilliant pastime, and could help in these uncertain times to help with depression and other problems. We can cover from the ages of 07 to 97 in most musical instruments. All the tutors are fully qualified and are CRB checked. If the student has no instrument this could be hired for a small fee subject to their circumstances.

Dear Members,

Covid-19 update for BMS Members

Further to the escalation of the Covid-19 virus and following the government’s advice, we will be closing the school from today, the 23rd March 2020, initially for one month. We will keep you advised of any ongoing changes.

We are however, hoping that we can accommodate most of our students, via an on-line link i.e. Skype or email. Our tutors will be contacting you directly, to see if you are interested in this facility.

For those not wishing to participate in the programme, we will endeavour to make up lesson time, once the virus has cleared.

As you are aware, we are a small charity run school and we are hoping that the majority of our students will support us, during these challenging times.

Thank you for support and stay safe.

Yours truly,

Mr John Shaw
Chairman/Founder

CORONAVIRUS – UPDATE

Dear Members,

Further to the recent announcement from the Prime Minister yesterday, advising the over 70’s and vulnerable to self-isolate, over the next 12 weeks, we may have to rethink our procedures.

We are currently open as usual, but will be monitoring the situation closely. Should things escalate further, we may have to consider ‘Skype tuition’ or home tuition, this would be a temporary measure, until the coronavirus has lifted.

We are in unchartered waters, so we will be taking guidance from the government.

If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Yours truly,

Mr John Shaw
Chairman/Founder

CORONAVIRUS

As you are aware, we are in the midst of a worldwide pandemic.

Here at BMS, we take your health very seriously. We will be installing hand sanitisers at every entrance of the school.

Would you kindly use hand wash, on your way into the school, so that everyone will feel reassured. If you are unwell with any coronavirus symptoms, please advise the school and do not attend classes.

We can only hope that things will improve over the coming months, and we will take all necessary precautions in the meantime.

Yours truly,

John Shaw – Founder

BMS is hosting an inclusion fund day this week, for children in the Blackpool and Wyre area, with special needs/disablities.

We have ordered extra tambourines and colourful egg shakers, so that their support workers can join in the fun too!

We have a selection of instruments for the children to try.

Lets hope this is the first of many fun events 🙂

Congratulations to Ethan for gaining a Merit, in his grade 4 drum exam.

Ethan is a student at BMS and also took part in the Rock Star Project.

The Rock Star Project, is due to re-start this February.

If you are wanting to do something different, why not give it a try?

Our over 55 well-being groups, are proving to be very popular.

We are hoping to set up additional classes, during the day time (day to be confirmed).

If you are interested in either the acoustic guitar or ukulele, please just give us a call – 01253 695398 or E:musicschoolblackpool@gmail.com.

We are now taking names – cost currently £24.00 pcm, during term time.

Hello,                                       ‘DO YOU WANT TO BE A ROCK STAR’

We are Blackpool Music School, a small charity run music school with a big passion for music.

We have an exciting project starting on Saturday the 22nd February 2020, at 12.30 pm. The Rock Star project has been put in place to hopefully, ignite young teenagers’ interest in music.  We are targeting the 12 to 16-year-old age range. The students can choose from keyboard, drums, guitar and even vocals. Project is held on a Saturday afternoon for approximately one and a half hours and is open to all teenagers. This is planned to be a fun event and at the end of the course, the group will come together to give a music performance.

Students of all abilities are welcome to apply, so even if they have never picked up a guitar or held a drumstick but are serious about learning an instrument, then get in touch.

This project is part funded, allowing us to offer new members, a place for just £5.00 per week; payments are to be paid one month in advance, by STO.  We have limited places available for a maximum of 20 students.  Project will run, as long as funding is available.

We are expecting an enthusiastic response to this project, so to ensure you can secure a place, please call us at your earliest convenience.

If you would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact the school on 01253 695398 or via email – musicschoolblackpool@gmail.com.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours truly,

John Shaw – Founder
